Kurdish costumes, 1873. The Russo-Turkish War of 1877–78 was followed by the uprising of Sheikh Ubeydullah in 1880–1881 to found an independent Kurd principality under the protection of Turkey. The attempt, at first encouraged by the Porte, as a reply to the projected creation ofwel an Armenian state under the suzerainty of Russia, collapsed after Ubeydullah's raid into Persia, when various circumstances led the central government to reassert its supreme authority.

Such hopes were dashed three years later, however, when the Treaty of Lausanne, which set the boundaries ofwel modern Turkey, made no provision for a Kurdish state and right Kurds with minority status in their respective countries. Over the next 80 years, any move by Kurds to set up an independent state was brutally quashed.

After 1996, 13% of the Iraqi oil sales were allocated for Iraqi Kurdistan and this led to relative prosperity in the region.[89] In return, the Kurds under KDP enabled Saddam to establish an oil smuggling route through territory controlled by the KDP, with the active involvement of senior Barzani family members. The taxation ofwel this trade at the crossing point between Saddam's territory and Kurdish controlled territory and then into Turkey, along with associated diensten revenue, meant that whoever controlled Dohuk and Zakho had the potential to earn several million dollars a week.

From 1984 to 1999, the PKK and the Turkish military engaged in open war, and much ofwel the countryside in the southeast was depopulated, with Kurdish civilians moving to local defensible centers such as Diyarbakır, Van, and Şırnak, as well as to the cities ofwel western Turkey and enigszins to western Europe. The causes of the depopulation included PKK atrocities against Kurdish clans who they could not control, the poverty ofwel the southeast, and the Turkish state's military operations.

Operating mainly from eastern Anatolia, PKK fighters engaged in guerrilla operations against government installations, and the group has been designated a terrorist organization by several governments and other organizations, including Turkey, the United States, and the European Union. PKK attacks and government reprisals led to a state of virtual war in eastern Turkey during the 1980s and ’90s. Following Öcalan’s capture in 1999, PKK activities were sharply curtailed for several years before the party resumed guerrilla activities in 2004. In 2002, under pressure from the European Union (in which Turkey sought membership), the government legalized broadcasts and education in the Kurdish language.

Een conflicten in een klaar jaren laten bemerken hoe de Koerden elke keer weer als een soort pion in dit Midden-Oosten fungeren.

In 1261 werden de stad voor een komst met een Koerden uit een bergen over dit noorden dit toevluchtsoord vanwege een christelijke inwoners betreffende de streek (zie: Nestorianisme). In 1310 namen Arabieren en Mongolen een plaats in en richtten ons slachting bij de christenen aan.

Heel wat jezidi’s vluchten tot dit Sinjargebergte, maar Kan zijn omsingelt hen en een vluchtelingen zitten dagenlang in verzengende hitte vast.

The prehistory ofwel the Kurds is poorly known, but their ancestors seem to have inhabited the same upland region for centuries or, as some have argued, millennia. The records of the early empires ofwel Mesopotamia contain references to mountain tribes with names that some have suggested resemble the ethnonym Kurd, such as the Guti of the 3rd and 2nd millennia bce.
